Melanie Costa, D.V.M.
Neurology Resident
Dr. Costa was born in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. She earned both her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Costa then completed a small-animal rotating internship and a small-animal neurology internship at Animal Health Partners in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, before being accepted into the VNC’s neurology residency program. Her interest in neurology began in college and was further reinforced when her own dog, Hercules, became non-ambulatory tetraparetic and had a ventral slot surgery for an intervertebral disc herniation at C5-6. “Experiencing this from the perspective of a worried pet owner highlighted the importance of clear and empathetic client communication, building trust, and providing excellent patient care and follow-up.” Since then, as a neurology intern, Dr. Costa fostered and adopted a Cane Corso puppy with a spinal fracture that was medically managed. Both of her dogs are now ambulatory and doing very well! Dr. Costa’s professional interests include all aspects of neurology, especially spinal cord injuries and neurosurgery.
